Counsellor in Training Volunteer

The Counsellor in Training (CIT) program is an opportunity for secondary school students to learn soft and hard skills that will prepare them for a camp counsellor position in future years. A CIT will develop leadership and critical thinking skills while earning volunteer hours. The CIT position provides youth with opportunities to gain experience and skills from our leaders while creating positive, memorable moments for campers from their community. A CIT volunteer is responsible for assisting counsellors while working toward instructing basic activities for campers themselves, under supervision. A CIT should be enthusiastic with an outgoing and engaging personality while demonstrating a positive, supportive attitude every day.

STEM Camp will train CITs on its program and provide guidance for best practices while working at camp. CITs will work directly with counsellors and campers and help make STEM Camp a fun place to be.

Volunteer Requirements  

The successful applicant should…

  • Commit to a minimum of (1) full week of volunteer work during the camp season
  • Be enrolled in secondary school and be between 14 and 17 years of age
  • Arrive on time for scheduled shifts
  • Be available to attend training and 
  • Adhere to STEM Camp Policies and Procedures

Volunteer Skills

The successful candidate should possess the following skills… 

  • Be friendly and courteous
  • Able to communicate effectively verbally
  • Able to leave their cell phones in their bags during camp hours

Bonus Skills

Skills that would be a bonus but are not required

  • Experience with Minecraft Education
  • Experience with Coding and Robotics 
  • Experience working with children between the ages of 5 and 13

Volunteer Responsibilities 

The responsibilities of a counsellor in training include…

  • Assisting with general camp responsibilities, including camp activities 
  • Supporting campers who require additional support, assisting with materials preparation, handing out supplies
  • Contributing to a fun, enjoyable, and safe atmosphere for ALL
  • Modelling appropriate behaviour and helping to create positive interactions  
  • Engaging with campers by sitting with them and talking with them during activities 
  • Treating campers equally, consistently and fairly 
  • Supervising campers during staff breaks 
  • Running STEM Games during before and aftercare.
  • Demonstrating emotional maturity, a positive attitude, and good decision-making 
  • Being self-confident and able to accept and adopt constructive feedback and
  • Adhering to STEM Camp policies and procedures
